“Let it Rain”, the second single from Mark Lucas & the Dead Setters’ imminent seventh album release, is a bright little number about the weather, or, more specifically, changing seasons, unrequited love and a girl on a westbound train carrying a redundant umbrella. There may even be a skerrick of truth to the tale.

In grim anticipation of a change in the weather
She carries in her hand a furled umbrella
But it’s never seen the light of day
And it’ll always be that way
Cos she’s always spent her life under cover

Let it rain Ah let it rain I’ll not see the sun again
That light can’t pierce the darkness over me
I know that time will fade the flame ‘till my heart is whole again
Damn the moon, black the sun, I’ll take the rain

I took her picture once but the world will never see
The image that I hold inside of me
And the summer in her eyes
Those endless hazy skies
The very ties that bind now set me free Let it rain

Now summer’s gone and we must fly
Shadows lengthen our goodbyes
The seasons turn and the wind calls south again Ah let it rain

On Observatory Hill there’s a park bench waiting
On a westbound train there’s a girl with no last name
And in the time that lies between
Waking hope and sleeping dreams
There’s a boy who lives his life from day to day
