Into the Sun (Magnetic West)

by Mark Lucas

about

I was inspired to write this song on 9th May 2016 when I heard of legendary Texan singer-songwriter Guy Clark's passing. I'd had a bottle I W Harper Kentucky bourbon whiskey sitting on the shelf for some months and the time had come.

"Black Diamond strings
Black Diamond strings
Drinking 1 W. Harper
Playing Black Diamond strings"- Guy Clark

lyrics

WELL I FINALLY TOOK THE BOTTLE OFF THE SHELF
THOUGH I SAW YOUR PAIN I STILL DRANK TO YOUR HEALTH
FUNNY HOW THE TIME IT SLIPS AWAY
BEFORE WE KNOW IT IT’S THE DIMMING OF THE DAY

THAT OLD CAR YOU DROVE IS DUSTY BUT IT’S SOUND
MAN YOU SURE KNEW HOW TO GET AROUND
I CAN HEAR THE WINDSCREEN WIPERS BEATING TIME
AS THE ROAD UNFOLDS BENEATH THOSE WORN-OUT TYRES

Bridge:
IN TRUTH NO MATTER HOW THE RACE IS RUN
IT’S THE ROAD THAT MAKES US EQUAL EVERY ONE
SOME DAY WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE
WE SET OUR COMPASS WEST TOWARD THE SETTING SUN

THEM WINDS OF CHANGE KEEP BLOWING UP MY STREET
I COULD BAR THE DOORS BUT I KNOW THEY CAN’T BE BEAT
THERE’S A GATE THAT WE MUST ALL SOME DAY PASS THROUGH
BEST PAINT IT BRIGHTLY AND NOT IN SHADES OF BLUE

Rpt bridge

YEAH I FINALLY TOOK THE BOTTLE OFF THE SHELF
NOW I’M HALF CUT AND TALKING TO MYSELF
AND YOU’RE SOMEWHERE OUT THERE WHERE IT ALL BEGUN
GIVE MY LOVE TO ROSE AS YOU SAIL INTO THE SUN
