about

Raised in rural England, and now a resident of inner-western Sydney, singer-songwriter, mark lucas spins tales rooted in the dark underbelly of urban experience, informed by a land as untamed and contrasting as the characters who inhabit it.

Mark’s songwriting truly captures a spirit of place having a style which is distinctly Australian yet not “Australiana”. As a performer, Mark’s 20 odd years experience have seen him come full circle from country and folk beginnings, through a varied career in rootsy rock and pop and back.

November 2005 saw the release of Mark’s third solo album. Working with long-time co-producer, Glenn Skarratt, “White Man Soul, sunburned country and the urban blues” is a collection of songs in an acoustic format, featuring a core group of Mark Oats (Bushwackers, Fiddlefest, Finn MacCool)- fiddle, Glenn Skarratt (Acoustic Shock, Donna Boyd Band)- mandolin, and Michael Vidale (Feral Swing Cats)- double bass.

“White Man Soul”, is an intimate journey into the heart and soul of a songwriter continuing to develop a relationship with his adopted home country, and a changing world seen through the eyes of a well-travelled family man. At once traditional and contemporary, this album continues to work that deep story-telling vein that lives at the heart of true roots music.

“A seamless mix of country & folk from Down Under…encapsulates perfectly the appeal of the true singer-songwriter.” ****–MM, Maverick Magazine (UK)
“one of Australia's premier songwriters” - Ken Date krdcountry.com
“a sheer joy on repeated listening” –David Dawson, Beat Magazine
“well written, well played, a gentle pleasure, and virtually impossible to dislike.”- Patrick Wilkins, Americana UK
“a near perfect musical setting for these distinctly Australian tales of restless souls, ghosts of the past, desert vistas and suburban angst.” – Kim Cheshire, Country Update
